Have you ever turned up to a community apple pressing day only to discover that everyone else has brought along 4 apples - maybe even a carrier bag full - and you have filled the back of the car with crates!?

THIS DAY IS FOR YOU!!!

No more being an Apple Day Pariah - Apple Day at Westley Farm is specially for those with lots of apples to juice

Last year, Apple Day was a juicing success! In fact, so many of you came that we ended up working the press for 3 days! A bumper crop of apples meant that we had over 300 bottles of delicious fresh apple juice of our own to pasteurise...a marathon task for me and my tea urn. This year, a lot of apples seem to be early. In our orchard some trees are hugely productive while others have only a few fruit. Don't forget - you can use scabby or fallen fruit for juice.

This year we ask everyone to BOOK FIRST - emailing me is best. Otherwise try 01285 760262

Orchards are a valuable habitat for many species of bees, beetles, bats and owls.  They are also an important part of our local heritage. Gloucestershire is rich in regional apple varieties and the best way to preserve these trees is to use the fruit!

The press we used last year is a mobile hydraulic press developed by Andy Charters of Stroud

Fed up with seeing so many apples and pears left to rot each year, Andy Charters has developed his own mobile press and plans to revive the old tradition of visiting individual and group orchards around Stroud so people can press their own .

“It is always sad to see so many apple and pear crops being left to waste every autumn because we haven’t the facilities to use or store them. Apples and pears can so easily be turned into cider or juice that can be drank throughout the year. Hopefully the availability of an easy to use mobile press in the community will change things, and that more people will be encouraged to press and drink their crop well after the season is over.”

Andy explained that press is exceedingly convenient, easy and safe to use, and can be towed practically anywhere. Capable of processing 250 – 300 kilos of fruit per hour, most garden orchards can be juiced in just a couple of hours.”
